Sault police charge man with robbery, drug possession

A 33-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a reported robbery at a business in Sault Ste. Marie.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a 911 call reporting a robbery in the 400 block of Bay Street at about 11:50 a.m. on May 9.

“An investigation revealed the accused stole items from the business and, when confronted by an employee, punched them and left,” police said in a news release.

Authorities said the man later returned to the same business and damaged property before leaving a second time.

“No physical injuries were reported,” said police.

The police service said officers located the suspect nearby and took him into custody. During a subsequent search, police said they found approximately one gram of suspected fentanyl in his possession.

As a result, the man has been charged with robbery, mischief, drug possession, possession of property obtained by crime and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
