Sault man charged with home robbery, forcible confinement

A 48-year-old man faces multiple charges after police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., say he broke into a home, forcibly confined the victim and stole belongings.

The charges stem from an incident that police say occurred on May 8.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said 911 operators received a report of a robbery that had allegedly taken place days earlier at a residence in a multi-unit residential building in the 100 block of East Street at about 1:15 p.m. on May 13.

“An investigation by officers with patrol services revealed the accused broke into the victim’s unit, forcibly confined them inside a room, threatened to physically harm them, and stole numerous belongings,” said police in a news release.

The police service also confirmed that the victim and the accused were known to one another.

Around 3:10 p.m. on May 13, officers with the Division 2 Unit located the accused and took them into custody.

As a result of the investigation, the man is charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, breaking-and-entering a dwelling house to commit an indictable offence and robbery.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
