Sault boardwalk incident results in assault charges for 3 teens

Three teens face assault charges after an incident over the weekend on the Sault Ste. Marie boardwalk that police say escalated when an adult attempted to intervene.

Officers were dispatched to St Mary’s River Drive around 8:30 p.m. on July 4 after 911 operators received a report of a disturbance involving youth.

“An investigation revealed the three accused assaulted a youth victim by punching them and punched an adult victim who attempted to intervene,” police said in a news release.

“The accused and the youth victim are known to one another.”

Police said no physical injuries were reported as a result of the altercation.

Police said the three accused — two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old — assaulted a youth victim by punching them and when an adult at the scene tried to step in, the accused also punched that individual.

Officers located the three accused — two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old — shortly before and after midnight.

“The arrests were made on the 4th and 5th,” police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit said in an email to CTV News.

Each of the accused is charged with two counts of assault. They were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 29.
