The Waterloo Region District School Board is warning parents of a privacy breach involving children enrolled in the Extended Day Program. In the email, they said there was a break-in at their office, which they became aware of on Monday The school board told CTV News the breach involved the “sensitive” information of 36 individuals. The email sent to parents indicated the Student Plan of Care was accessed, which includes the child’s name, photo, grade, OEN, homeroom teacher, school, date of birth, emergency contacts, relationship, phone numbers, contact information, medical conditions, symptoms, medication and name of their health care provider. The school board said the breach was reported to Waterloo Regional Police. “We regret that this incident occurred and are reviewing our practices and processes to ensure the privacy and security of personal information, and to prevent similar incidents in the future,” stated Scott Miller, WRDSB’s chief executive officer, in an email to CTV News. The board also told parents it “will be reviewing our current practices to ensure we are protecting privacy,” adding that a complaint can be filed with the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
