After more than 20 years, 95.7 NewsRadio has been taken off the air in Halifax. Rogers, which owns the station, says it was one of six across the country in four markets closing due to “declining audience and revenue trends.” “After a thorough review of our radio stations across the country, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close 95.7 NewsRadio,” Rogers Sports & Media spokesperson Charmaine Khan said in an email to CTV News. Others closing include news and sports stations in Vancouver, B.C., Calgary, Alta., and Kitchener, Ont. In all, 230 jobs were impacted by the cuts across Rogers Sports & Media, 80 of which are tied to the six radio station closures. “We continue to invest in local news here through CityNews digital (web and social),” Khan added. “We are grateful to our listeners and to our team for their contributions to the local community.” The station originally started in 2005 as News 95.7 along with News 91.9 in Moncton, N.B., and News 88.9 in Saint John, N.B. In Halifax, the studios were located in the Young Tower on Young Street throughout its time on air. During its tenure, it delivered talk shows, and information and news through the day. The stations in Moncton and Saint John were sold off to other companies in 2013. Rogers continues to own and operate 44 radio stations in nearly 30 communities across the country.
