Police searching for answers, after eight-year-old finds human jawbone

Sudbury police officials are continuing to investigate, after a jaw bone was discovered by a local eight-year-old.

"We looked at it and didn't know what it was. My little brother thought it was fake," said Isabella Gauthier.

Gauthier found the human remains while playing with family and friends on Sunday afternoon near Fieldstone Drive in Greater Sudbury.

"We called the police immediately and waited for them to arrive," said Mark Gauthier, Isabella's dad.

Police have been stationed in the area since the weekend; looking for more evidence in and around the undeveloped area that backs onto Fieldstone Drive, a small residential street in Greater Sudbury.

For area resident Martin Gagne, the discovery was a shock.

"You don't expect to find body parts," he said. "Especially a jaw or a head or something and especially when you have kids running around."

Police officials won't say if any other remains have been found as officers continue to investigate.

"The investigative team has sought the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police, who have a specially trained K9 and we expect the arrival of that team to arrive Wednesday," said Staff Sergeant Marc Brunette, Greater Sudbury Police.

"The area where the bone was found is being searched thoroughly by police," added Dr. David Cameron, regional coroner.

"There was some speculation that the bone may have been brought in with a load of sand from another location, but this is far from certain."

Cameron said it is too early to comment on the age of the jaw bone at this stage. He said it is too difficult to determine without further testing.
