Police seek suspect in targeted Sudbury shooting

Sudbury police investigating apparent home invasion

On Tuesday morning, officers with the Greater Sudbury Police Service forensic unit were processing the scene of a shooting at an apartment building located at the corner of Spruce and Eyre Streets. The investigation follows an incident that occurred early Monday afternoon.

Victim located with gunshot wound

Police confirmed a 58-year-old man was shot inside an apartment unit. Upon arrival, first responders located the victim and provided immediate aid.

“Upon police arrival, police did locate a 58-year-old male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen,” said Sarah Kaelas, a multi-media marketing specialist with Greater Sudbury police. “He was transported to hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.”

Incident believed to be targeted and isolated

The building, which contains a convenience store and five residential apartments, was the focus of a significant police presence. The clerk working in the ground-floor store reported that customers have been curious about the event, with some mentioning they heard the gunshot.

Authorities have assured the public that this was not a random act.

“This was a targeted isolated incident where the individuals were known to each other,” Kaelas said. “So there is no threat to public safety at this time.”

Search for suspect ongoing

The suspect fled the area prior to the arrival of police officers. The Criminal Investigations Division has taken the lead in the search for the individual responsible. Police continue to canvass the neighbourhood for witnesses and are specifically requesting any video surveillance footage from the area captured around the time of the shooting, which occurred at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Police appeal for public assistance

Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Anyone with information, any tips on the individuals involved or who were in the area at the time, any witnesses to come forward,” said Kaelas.
