Now fatal crash on Hwy. 101 marks 6th traffic death in Timmins in 2 months

A person has died following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 East in Porcupine on Sunday, the Timmins Police Service announced Wednesday.

Police said the single occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the Dec. 7 collision has “succumbed to his injuries.” The occupants of the second vehicle received minor injuries and have since been treated and released.

Police urge vigilance amid surge in crashes

The fatal incident marks the sixth fatal motor vehicle collision in the Timmins community over the last two months.

Const. Colyn Watson, with the traffic unit, emphasized the recent and tragic frequency of serious collisions.

“Over the last two months, we have responded to six fatal motor vehicle collisions in our community. These incidents have had a profound impact on families, loved ones, and first responders,” said Watson.

“Please drive according to road and weather conditions, reduce your speed when necessary, and stay focused on the task of driving,” added Watson.

“For pedestrians, we ask that you use marked crossings, make yourself visible, and take the time to ensure traffic has stopped before entering the roadway.”

Roadway reopened after initial investigation

Police initially reported the crash shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, prompting the closure of Highway 101 East between Lawrence Street and Bristol Road. Timmins police advised the public to avoid the area while emergency crews and investigators worked.

The roadway was reopened to traffic at about 11 p.m. that night after officers completed their on-scene duties.

In an update Monday morning, police reported had one person was in “critical condition.”

Investigation ongoing

“This incident remains under active investigation,” said Timmins police on Wednesday.

The collision is being investigated by the police service’s traffic unit and criminal investigation division.

“Further information will be provided as the investigation continues,” said police.
