Northern Ont. traffic stop leads to 5 charges, 2 impaired

A 27-year-old man from Burk’s Falls is facing impaired driving charges following a late-night traffic stop in the Municipality of Callander earlier this month.

Ontario Provincial Police said that an officer conducted a traffic stop on a white pickup truck travelling southbound on Callander Bay Drive after observing the vehicle failing to maintain lane position and driving on the shoulder at about 11:20 p.m. on April 13.

“During the interaction, the officer observed signs consistent with impairment by alcohol,” said OPP in a news release.

“The driver was arrested and transported to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing.”

Charges, penalties, court date

As a result of the investigation, the motorist has been charged with failing to surrender his licence, failing to surrender an insurance card and failing to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle along with two impaired driving offences, including operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

In addition to the charges, the man’s driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and the truck was towed and impounded by police for seven days.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on May 19.

Report impaired drivers

The police service used the incident to emphasize its commitment to road safety and keeping impaired drivers off the roads.

“OPP remains committed to taking alcohol/drug-impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education,” police said in a related social media post.

“Drive sober,” added OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer.

OPP urges anyone who suspects that someone is driving while impaired to dial 911.
