Northern fire update August 2, 2018

The newest numbers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry shows 49 fires are still active in the region, 21 are considered not under control and 28 are being held, are under control or being observed.

The page has turned on a new month, but the story is the same for people worried about and those battling the fores fires in our region.

Out-of-province crews come and go and are replaced by fresh firefighters who are making progress, but they need help from the weather.

Shayne McCool is a fire information officer for Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

"What we’re expecting, like you mentioned, is some hot sunny weather. With that there will be some challenges potentially, depending on wind conditions, so we are watching the situation very close. Parry Sound 33 is just over 11.000 hectares. We were able yesterday to get a more accurate size of the fire, just due to the fact that some of the smoke had cleared with the favourable weather we saw, so we were remapping the fire. And we also did a bit of ignition yesterday, which helps us tie in the fire, which means a little bit less work for our ground crews and a little bit more of a consolidated fire line." said McCool.
