North Bay teen charged with stunt driving on Highway 11

A North Bay teen is facing stunt driving charges after being clocked travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 11 earlier this month.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped the car shortly after midnight on Feb. 8, just south of North Bay after it was observed travelling 152 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

“The 18-year-old driver from North Bay was charged with stunt driving,” OPP said in a social media post.

In Ontario, under provincial law, drivers caught driving 150 kilometres per hour or more are subject to stunt driving charges. This applies anywhere in the province, including sections of freeways with speed limits of 110 kilometres per hour.

Immediate penalties applied

Following the stop, in addition to the charge, the motorist received an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the car was towed away and impounded for 14 days.

“High speeds at night greatly reduce visibility and reaction time,” OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer said.

“Slow down and drive responsibly.”
