No gun found following Sudbury standoff, but man charged with assault

Police in Sudbury say suspects have been taken into custody after barricading themselves inside a Cambrian Village home for several hours on Wednesday.

A report of a man with a gun in Greater Sudbury led to an hours-long standoff Wednesday near Fielding Street, but a firearm was not found.

In a news release Thursday, Sudbury police said 911 call came in at 8:55 a.m. “from an open line where two individuals were heard yelling and one of the individuals stated that he had a gun.”

“Patrol officers were dispatched to the housing complex on Cambrian Village Road off Fielding Street as it was determined that the call originated from one of the residential units,” police said.

“Officers set up containment and a hold and secure was requested at Churchill Public out of an abundance of caution. Officers were able to determine where the call originated and began communicating with the individuals inside.”

Around 2:30 p.m., negotiators were able to convince the two people inside the residence to surrender.

“One of the individuals was released unconditionally as there was no information or evidence to suggest that they were in possession of the firearm,” police said.

No gun found

“The second individual was held in police custody in relation to the firearm.”

A search warrant was obtained, but a search of the residence “did not locate a firearm.”

However, while he was in custody, police realized the 45-year-old man was charged with assault with a weapon for a previous instance of intimate partner violence.

“He was held in police custody overnight and will attend bail court today,” police said.

“We would like to thank the community members residing in the housing complex for their cooperation and patience during this incident.”
