No garbage, recycling collection in Sudbury until the end of March

Sudbury has issued a parking ban on all roads as crews shift from restoring access to widening roads. Waste collection is also suspended for another week.

Officials in Greater Sudbury announced Friday evening that roadside collection of garbage, compost and recycling won’t resume until March 30.

Also announced March 20 was a city-wide parking ban on city streets until further notice.

The measures are in place while the city works to dig out from a record-breaking snowstorm that dumped at least 42 cm of snow on the region March 15-16.

“To support safe and efficient road clearing and widening operations, roadside collection of garbage, green cart organics, and blue box recyclables will be suspended for an additional week,” the city said.

But normal limits on what can be left at the curb will be lifted temporarily once service resumes March 30 for residential and non-residential areas.

Residents will be allowed to throw out up to four garbage bags instead of two, while 12 yellow bags can be discarded for people registered in that program.

Extra garbage bags will be allowed

Also for the week of March 30, extra recycling can be left at the road in cardboard boxes no larger than a blue box.

“Organic waste exceeding green cart capacity may be placed in certified compostable bags and set on top of or beside your green cart in a cardboard box or similar small container without a lid,” the city said.

“Do not place directly on the ground.”

Landfill and recycling centres will remain closed next week, as well as related services such as toxic taxi appointments and the collection of old furniture or appliances.

In addition, a parking ban is in place to help crews with snow plowing.

“With all roads now having received at least a first pass and basic access restored, city crews have shifted focus to clearing laneways and cul-de-sacs, as well as widening roads,” the city said.

“These efforts can be significantly delayed by vehicles parked on municipal roads, in laneways or too close to the end of driveways within the road allowance.”

As a result, a parking ban has been implemented on all municipal roads, excluding paid on-street parking.

The ban will be enforced 24 hours a day until the significant weather event declaration is lifted.

“Vehicles that are impeding snow removal may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense,” the city said.

“Bylaw enforcement officers will make reasonable efforts to contact vehicle owners before taking enforcement action.”

Certain residential roads will be closed for a short period “to accelerate snow clearing, road widening and eventual snowbank removal.”

“These short-term closures are necessary to complete the work as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to residents,” the city said.
