The Nipissing Serenity Hospice’s 10th annual Hike for Hospice has shattered its fundraising goal, becoming the most successful single fundraiser in the organization’s history. The 2025 event raised more than $143,500, far surpassing its $100,000 target. “We are excited to have surpassed that goal and have now officially raised more money than any other fundraiser we’ve done to date,” said Bernadette Lindsay, the hospice’s fund development coordinator, in a news release. Since the North Bay, Ont., event began in 2016, the Hike for Hospice has raised more than $800,000 for the organization. Community support crucial for hospice operations Executive director Gil Pharand emphasized that the event’s success is vital for the hospice’s ability to operate. While the Ontario Government provides some funding, it is restricted to specific needs. “We have to support our additional operational needs through private support. We need to ensure that we can continue to provide this very valuable service,” Pharand said. “That’s where Hike for Hospice comes in.” Pharand expressed profound gratitude for the community’s role in the achievement. “The ongoing commitment never ceases to amaze us. We truly are grateful,” Pharand said. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible,” said the hospice in a social media post. Corporate sponsor gives back The Degagne Group of Companies acted as the event’s title sponsor for the second consecutive year. The company’s team, comprising family members and employees, raised more than $21,000 through supplier donations and other fundraisers. Dan Degagne linked the company’s support to the care his family received. In a statement, Degagne expressed his gratitude to all staff at the hospice “for helping him, his three daughters and family during a very difficult time.” “The Hospice environment was always welcoming, warm and nurturing,” he said. “Our family appreciates the kindness and hospitality that was offered every single time we entered that door. Thank you for taking excellent care of our loved ones, especially in the times they need it most.” Donations continue The hospice has stated that its online donation page is always available and any funds provided ensure the hospice can continue providing essential end-of-life care. “Everyone deserves as much time as possible with their loved ones. Nipissing Serenity Hospice provides that, and something even more important. They give us quality time.
