Meet Moka: Nipissing victim services’ newest support dog

Moka, an 18-month-old standard poodle, has joined the Nipissing region & North Bay police to support crime & tragedy victims & provide aid at community events.

The North Bay Police Service and Victim Services of Nipissing District have introduced their newest generation support dog, an 18-month-old Standard Poodle named Moka.

Moka has been specially selected, trained and certified. The poodle was donated as a puppy through the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

Calm presence for those affected by crime, tragedy

In her new role, Moka will provide comfort and emotional support to individuals affected by crime and tragedy through Victim Services of Nipissing District, including at the Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.

Moka will also work closely with the North Bay Police Service’s Community Response Unit to assist with community events and engagement initiatives and will support the police service’s Wellness Committee in promoting member wellness.

“Moka has embraced her new role working alongside her handler Gillian,” said victim services executive director Kathleen Jodouin in a news release.

“Together they are building a working partnership built on consistency, trust, and regular training, assisting Moka in gaining confidence as she begins her career with Victim Services of Nipissing District.”

Big paws to fill

Moka’s introduction comes less than two weeks after her predecessor, Chewie, a much beloved yellow lab, hung up his vest after eight years of service in the region.

In retirement, Chewie remains in the care of his former handler Gillian MacIntosh and her husband, North Bay police Const. Doug MacIntosh.

‘Meaningful impact’ for members, community

Police Chief Daryl Longworth said support dogs like Moka are a valuable resource in assisting investigations and victim services, as well as in promoting member wellness.

“Her presence will have a meaningful impact in the community and with our members,” said Longworth.

The police service says members of the public may begin to see Moka in the community alongside her handler and everyone is encouraged to say hello when they see her out and about.
