Heavy rain, followed by flash freeze, possible across the northeast

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for communities across northeastern Ontario, as wet weather followed by a drop in temperatures is expected to cause some issues.

A rainfall alert is in effect Thursday in Greater Sudbury, where as much as 30 mm could fall.

“Rainfall, combined with melting snow, is expected and the frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.

“Rain will affect the areas beginning this morning before changing over to snow early Friday morning as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark,” Environment Canada said.

“Roofs of weak structures are at an increased risk of collapse under the weight of snow.”

The alert is expected to continue into Friday, when areas in and around Sudbury, North Bay, the Sault and Timmins could experience a flash freeze.

“Northerly winds gusting 50 to 60 km/h may result in blowing snow tonight into Friday,” the weather statement said.

“Roads and walkways may become icy and slippery. Travel may become difficult at times.”
