Heavy police presence on Manitoulin Island ends, suspects in custody

A significant police investigation that prompted public advisories for residents to avoid parts of Manitoulin Island on Saturday has ended with suspects in custody.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police alerted the public to the situation around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Multiple social media posts advised of a “heavy police presence” on Wakegijig Avenue in Wikwemikoong First Nation due to an active investigation.

Authorities repeatedly asked the public to avoid the area while the operation was ongoing.

Both police services said “there is no threat to public safety,” in their social media posts.

Investigation concludes overnight

OPP provided an update at 10:40 p.m., stating that a heavy police presence remained in the area and reiterating their request for the public to stay away.

The situation was resolved early Sunday morning.

“The investigation is now resolved and Wakegijig Avenue is open,” said Wikwemikong tribal police shortly before 1:30 a.m.

The OPP confirmed the conclusion of the incident at 3:20 a.m.

“Resuming regular patrols and the higher-than-normal police presence has ended,” said OPP.

Suspects apprehended

OPP provided only a brief update on the outcome of the investigation.

“Suspects are in police custody and no others are being sought,” said police.

The police services did not disclose the nature of the incident that prompted the large-scale response, how many suspects were taken into custody or what charges are pending.

“No further information will be released at this time,” said OPP on Sunday morning.
