Driver injured trying to pass a tractor-trailer on Hwy. 17

The 67-year-old from La Patrie, Que., was charged after a pickup truck clipped a tractor-trailer while trying to pass on Highway 17 near Bruce Mines on Feb. 18.

Police are urging caution on the roads after a pickup truck driver was injured trying to pass a transport truck early in the morning Feb. 18 on Highway 17 near Bruce Mines.

The 67-year-old man from La Patrie, Que., was later charged after being first taken to hospital.

The incident took place around 6:30 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Feb. 19.

Police and paramedics responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two westbound vehicles.

“Investigation determined that a pickup truck was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer when it contacted the front of the tractor-trailer while completing the manoeuvre,” the OPP said.

“The pickup then spun out of control, overturned and came to rest on its roof in the northbound ditch.”

The driver of the pickup was taken to hospital in Sault Ste. Marie and he was later charged under the Highway Traffic Act with making an unsafe attempt to pass.

“The OPP urges drivers to recognize that bare and dry roads, whether in winter or any season, do not eliminate risk,” police said.

“Proper judgment, patience and safe passing practices are essential to prevent collisions. Pass with caution. Someone’s family is on that road.”
