Driver charged after tractor-trailer hits Thunder Bay overpass

A 22-year-old commercial driver from Winnipeg faces multiple Highway Traffic Act charges after a tractor-trailer struck a railway overpass in Thunder Bay on Friday.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to the collision on James Street near Gore Street around 8:30 a.m. on May 2.

Ontario Provincial Police and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Police Service assisted at the scene.

The commercial vehicle, carrying a shipping container, hit the bottom of the overpass.

“No injuries were reported and the overpass was inspected before being deemed safe,” said police in a news release.

As a result of the incident and subsequent investigation, the driver, a 22-year-old man, was charged with careless driving, driving with an unsecure load, and operating an overheight vehicle.

The roadway was closed for an extended period on Friday as a safety precaution but reopened that afternoon.
