Attempted murder among 50+ charges against a U.S. man in Ontario IPV investigation

An American man faces attempted murder and dozens of other charges following an extensive UCCM Anishnaabe Police IPV investigation on Manitoulin and beyond.

A 25-year-old American man has been charged with dozens of offences following an extensive investigation into alleged intimate partner violence spanning multiple locations in Ontario throughout May.

The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service said officers responded to a domestic violence complaint in Sheshegwaning First Nation on May 31 after receiving information that a female victim had escaped from a residence and was seeking assistance. According to police, officers attended the area, contained the residence and arrested the accused after he fled into a nearby bush area.

Investigation reveals series of alleged incidents

The investigation uncovered a series of allegations of incidents in both Sheshegwaning and elsewhere in the province.

“As the investigation progressed, officers obtained detailed information regarding a series of alleged incidents that occurred between May 2 and May 31,” police said in a news release June 18.

Police added that the allegations included repeated physical violence, forcible confinement, criminal harassment, thefts, sexual violence, choking and strangulation incidents, property damage, and the non-consensual taking and publication of an intimate image.

“Investigators also obtained information relating to an alleged attempted murder occurring during an incident in Richmond Hill, Ont.,” police said.

Dozens of charges laid

As a result, the accused, from Halethorpe, Maryland, has been charged with:

• attempted murder,
• voyeurism,
• publication of an intimate image without consent,
• 4 counts of criminal harassment,
• 12 counts of assault — spousal,
• 2 counts of assault with a weapon,
• 7 counts of assault causing bodily harm,
• 2 counts of sexual assault,
• 6 counts of forcible confinement,
• 2 counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
• 7 counts of theft under $5,000,
• 3 counts of possession of property obtained by crime and
• 3 counts of mischief.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice on June 1.

“As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released at this time,” police said.
