Police are investigating after a baby boy born premature at 34 weeks was abandoned on the doorstep of a home in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore. Longueuil Police (SPAL) says it received a 911 call at 11 p.m. Sunday about the newborn, who was left outside a home on Bourgeoys Street. “Police and paramedics provided care to the baby, who was then transported to a hospital,” said Jacqueline Pierre, a spokesperson with Longueuil police. “Fortunately, the baby is doing well.” The force adds that the baby’s umbilical cord was still attached, and the infant’s health is being closely monitored. A security perimeter has been set up in the area to allow officers to go door-to-door, talk to neighbours and examine security footage. “At this time, the person who abandoned the baby has not been identified,” said Pierre, adding that the investigation is ongoing. Under the Criminal Code, a person found guilty of child abandonment can face a sentence of five years in prison. “[Youth protection] will try to find who is the mother, and if there is significant family for that child, and if not, right away, he will be placed for stability,” said lawyer Valérie Assouline, who specializes in family and juvenile law. “The law is not made to punish the parents.
