Westmount's Eugenie Bouchard wins Girls Singles at Wimbledon

Westmount’s Eugenie Bouchard is the new Wimbledon Girls champion as the 18-year-old beat the Ukrainian Elena Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 Saturday.

Bouchard, ranked 309 in the world, broke serve five times and hit 21 winners and managed to close out the match in about one hour.

It was Bouchard’s first time at the finals of a major singles tournament, after being beaten twice in the semi-finals at the Australian Open. She did, however, win the doubles title at Wimbledon last year.

Bouchard, who is coached by retired French pro Nathalie Tauziat, bagged the first set in a mere 29 minutes and broke serve in the very first game after her opponent double faulted.

The girls finals could have been an all-Montreal affair, however Svitolina beat Francoise Abanda in the semi-finals.

Bouchard has now won 12 straight matches, after winning the AEGON girls title in Roehampton last week.

She will now play for the Wimbledon girls doubles championshiop semi-finals alongside American Taylor Townshend against Abanda and the American Sachia Vickery.
