REM refresher: Here’s how to take the light rail system

The REM officially launched service to l'Anse-al'orme station, providing a new public transit option to residents in Montreal's West Island.

The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) has just opened its latest branch to Montreal’s West Island.

The sector joins the South Shore link, inaugurated in July 2023, and the North Shore line, in service as of November 2025.

If this is your first time taking the REM, or if you’re just in need of a refresher, here’s everything you need to know:

Accessible to all

The network boasts that all of its stations are universally accessible, complete with bike racks and reachable by public transit via bus and paratransit.

“Some stations have park-and-ride lots, with both free and paid spaces,” the REM notes.

Opening hours

The network is available between roughly 5:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., with special schedules on weekends and holidays.

Transit fares

The cost to take the REM is integrated in the ARTM’s fare schedule, which includes the Metro, bus and train, all of which are compatible with the OPUS card.

Prices vary according to the point of departure, point of arrival, and the geographical zones crossed along the way (A, B, C or D).
