Reckless driving plagues Pointe-Calumet A fatal police chase on Sunday has residents worried about the safety of the streets near Beachclub in Pointe-Calumet.

Residents of Pointe Calumet want police to increase patrols in their town following the death of a retired man.

On Sunday a speeding driver struck and killed Jean Brien, 66, while fleeing from police.

That driver is now facing multiple charges including hit and run causing death.

But people who live in the small town west of Montreal said it's not unusual for drivers to race down streets going three times the 40 km/h limit.

"I have a little boy, five years old, when he plays with his four-wheels it's very dangerous here," said Julie Ladouceur. "The speed limit is not respected. It's dangerous."

Sunday's incident began when police near the Pointe Calumet Beach Club spotted someone driving erratically, and a driver sped off along André Soucy St.

Residents like Pierre Landry said there is no way for a single police officer to catch bad drivers.

"There are three roads in Pointe Calumet, so if they wanted to catch someone all they would have to do is put a car on each corner," said Landry.

Ladouceur said it would be better if police never chased wayward drivers at all.

"They could call another police [officer] and say describe the car and stop them at the entrance of the autoroute," said Ladouceur.
