RECALL: Pistachio ice cream by Sweemory Inc.

Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) is advising the public not to consume certain ice cream products by Sweemory Inc. as they may contain salmonella.

The products being recalled include pistachio ice cream (500 ml and 1L formats), Arabic ice cream (500 ml and 1L formats) and pistachio topping (added to the ice cream) sold until Sept. 8.

“The products were served by a clerk in an unlabeled white plastic container,” MAPAQ notes. “They may also have been sold in various sizes, on site, for immediate consumption.”

The warning has been issued as a precautionary measure.

“Anyone in possession of one of these products is advised not to consume it,” the ministry warns. “They should return it to the establishment where they purchased it or throw it away.”

The recall states that consuming the products may pose a health risk, regardless of whether or not there are signs of spoilage or suspicious odours.

“Consuming food contaminated with salmonella bacteria can cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness,” MAPAQ states. “In young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, this illness can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.”

Symptoms usually appear six to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, sometimes accompanied by blood in the stool, lasting between three to seven days.

Salmonellosis can also lead to long-term complications, including a severe form of arthritis.

MAPAQ notes that people should consult a health care professional if symptoms related to the consumption of a recalled product appear.

The warning comes after a food recall issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) following a national outbreak of salmonella infections linked to contaminated pistachios distributed to various establishments across the country.

There have been no cases of illness reported in connection with this recall.
