Montreal’s public health department is warning residents about a new confirmed case of measles. The case involves a tourist who visited Montreal on March 24 while they were contagious, the department said. People who visited the following locations might have been exposed to the disease: Public health recommends that anyone who went to those places on the dates listed should check if they are protected against measles. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and a widespread rash. Officials say that if a person received one dose of the measles vaccine before 12 months of age, two additional doses are needed to ensure protection. After 12 months of age, a child’s immune system is mature enough to provide long-lasting protection. Approximately one in 3,000 children who contract measles die from it. Quebec residents can book an appointment to get the vaccine by visiting Clic Santé or by calling 1-877-644-4545. The list of places and dates of possible exposure to measles is available on the Government of Quebec website.
