Neil Patrick Harris gets married

Neil Patrick Harris is now married.

The 41-year-old star took to his Twitter account to well and truly silence rumours he is set to split up from fiancé David Burtka by revealing the couple tied the knot in Italy at the weekend.

In a message attached to a silhouetted picture of the pair, he wrote: "Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the 'n' and 'd' in 'husband'. (sic)"

The couple's marriage comes just one month after he silenced speculation he and David's relationship was on the rocks by posing a picture of the pair and their four-year-old twins Harper and Gideon on Instagram.

The 'How I Met Your Mother' star accompanied the snap with the caption: "I couldn't be more in love with my family. Any reports to the contrary are woefully mistaken. #grateful (sic)."

Neil and David got engaged following the passing of the Marriage Equality Act in New York in June 2011.

The pair revealed they had in fact proposed to each other five years beforehand but kept it a secret until the law was passed.
