Most Montrealers undecided with municipal elections under a month away

Montreal residents will have a month to decide who they want to see as their next mayor, but not everyone has made up their mind.

Almost half of Montrealers remain undecided about who to vote for in the upcoming municipal elections, according to a new Léger poll.

Political analyst Justine McIntyre says it is harder to get people out to vote in municipal elections compared to provincial or federal ones.

That is why she says it is important for candidates to get out there and connect with voters.

“I still think that good old-fashioned knocking on doors and talking to people is the way to go,” said McIntyre.

A key element as participation rates are sliding.

Numbers from Elections Montreal show voter turnout in the 2021 municipal election was at 38 per cent.

This is compared to 2017, when voter turnout was 42 per cent, and in 2013, when it was 43 per cent.

“Snow clearing, garbage removal, public transit, these are all things that are handled by your municipal government,” says McIntyre. “So, it’s a bit of a conundrum to me why voter turnout is low because these are really important issues.”

Voters will head to the polls on Nov. 2.
