McGill reverses convocation ticket cuts after student backlash

McGill University will offer four tickets per graduate with costs waived after frustration over ticket limits.

McGill University has reversed changes it made to this year’s convocation ceremony following backlash from graduating students.

The university will once again offer four free tickets per graduate, walking back its earlier decision to provide only two and charge $25 for each additional ticket.

In a letter sent to graduating students, McGill apologized and acknowledged that the situation could have been handled better.

“I am truly sorry that the scramble to adapt to a venue change has negatively impacted so many of you. Please know that we are working hard, with a view to resolving the problems you’ve flagged,” said interim Deputy Provost Angela Campbell in the letter.

The university also said it is addressing concerns about the temperature at the new venue, where the ceremonies will take place.

“We’re addressing this by installing a temporary cooling system to ensure a more comfortable environment,” Campbell noted.
