Liberal party crisis: MNA Marwah Rizqy says she is at peace with herself

MNA Marwah Rizqy, at the centre of the crisis in the Quebec Liberal Party, says she is at peace with herself.

Back in the National Assembly after the crisis that shook the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ), MNA Marwah Rizqy says she is at peace with herself and with the actions she was “forced” to take.

It should be noted that after his victory as leader of the Liberals, Pablo Rodriguez — who did not have a seat in the National Assembly — appointed Rizqy as parliamentary leader.

Geneviève Hinse, a long-time Rodriguez collaborator, then became his chief of staff.

But relations between the two women soured.

Rizqy dismissed Hinse without first discussing it with the Liberal leader. In response, Rodriguez expelled the Saint-Laurent MNA from the caucus.

These events plunged the party into a deep crisis that ended with Rodriguez’s resignation last December.

Now, Hinse is suing Marwah Rizqy for $500,000 for her dismissal.

In Rizqy’s statement of defence, a copy of which was obtained by The Canadian Press on Monday, she justified her decision to dismiss her chief of staff.

Marwah Rizqy maintains that, despite her warnings, Hinse and Rodriguez wanted to contravene the rules of the National Assembly by ignoring the Ethics Commissioner and hiring staff paid by the National Assembly for “partisan purposes.”

When asked on Tuesday if she wanted to return to the Liberal caucus, the Saint-Laurent MNA said that it was “the prerogative of the next leader.”

“I never wanted to be excluded,” Rizqy said Tuesday during a news scrum at the National Assembly.

“I can assure you that I did everything I could to preserve my integrity and that of the party when I was parliamentary leader,” she added.
