‘We will not tolerate property damage or violence’: London police charge Best Defence Conference protestor

An Owen Sound woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly damaging property and resisting arrest during the Best Defence Conference in downtown London, Ont. Tuesday morning.

According to a news release from the London Police Service, on Tuesday at approximately 7:45 a.m., police responded to reports of an active protest taking place outside RBC Place, located on the corner of York and Wellington streets.

Approximately 100 protestors were out in opposition to the Best Defence Conference, an event that focuses on Canadian aerospace, defence and public safety, and offers attendees opportunities to build strategic partnerships, enhance supply chains, and gain insights into Canadian procurement programs, according to its website.

As previously reported by CTV News, protesters said they were on site to show their opposition for the Canadian government funding companies they say are providing weapons used by countries, including Israel.

London police say protestors blocked the front entrance of the building and used construction materials to barricade the parking garage. Paint was also thrown at staff members, and police were subsequently dispatched.

One female suspect, who was wearing a mask, used a hammer to break electronic locks off the building entrance, police say.

When officers approached the suspect, she fled from police into the crowd of protesters. When officers informed her that she was under arrest, she resisted police.

As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old woman from Owen Sound, has been charged with the following offences for her alleged involvement:

• Mischief over $5,000
• Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
• Resist arrest
• Disguise with intent

The damage to the building is estimated at approximately $32,000.

“The London Police Service is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all. We acknowledge the importance of an individual’s right to freedom of opinion, expression, and peaceful assembly,” police said in a statement. “However, we will not tolerate property damage or violence in the name of any cause and will thoroughly investigate all reports of this nature.”

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in London court on Dec. 4, in relation to the charges.

Investigators are asking for assistance in identifying the other protesters in attendance at the event on Tuesday morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact the London Police Service at [phone] or Crime Stoppers. Information can also be sent in online anonymously via the London Middlesex Crime Stoppers website.
