The OPP is speaking out about a video on social media circulating involving police and an elderly person in Norwich Township. Police said it is aware of the video, which is in relation to a police-enforceable court order. On Friday, Oxford OPP went to a home with a valid court order related to a family dispute about the care of an elderly person. Officers said at this time, no enforcement action has been taken and police involvement was solely to enforce the court order and ensure well-being of those involved. “The OPP recognizes the emotional and challenging nature of family-related disputes involving the care of elderly individuals,” OPP wrote in a news release. “Officers remain committed to acting impartially, lawfully, and with compassion, while respecting the authority of the courts. The OPP is also aware of misinformation circulating online. To be clear, the court order is not related to, nor does it involve, Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) legislation.” The police remind it has no role in authorizing, administering, or facilitating MAID, adding that any comments or claims that suggest otherwise are untrue. “The OPP urges the public to refrain from speculation due to the sensitive legal and personal circumstances,” the release concluded. No further details on the matter will be released.
