‘Don’t know how he’s alive’: Motorcycle crash in Port Stanley leaves man with life-altering injuries

Doctors at London Health Sciences Centre are trying to put Gage Taylor back together after a serious motorcycle crash Thursday in Port Stanley, Ont. left him broken from head to toe.

“They put him in a medically induced coma because of the severity of his injuries and then they took him in for surgery right away,” said Tammy Hunter, Taylor’s mom.

He sustained multiple injuries. He has a broken pelvis, broken leg, and broken wrist. He has an air pocket between his chest wall and lungs, crushed urethra, and has both a feeding and chest tube.

“The first night he was there, he went in and he had three surgeries,” said Hunter.

“They repaired an open fractured on his wrist. They repaired his shattered leg with nails because he had bones sticking out and they put him in a pelvic stabilizer. Today, he is having his shoulder repaired. They’re going to put steel plates in his shoulder, and they’re going to attempt to repair his pelvis.”

Hunter said her son was pulling out of the gas station on the outskirts of the village when he and an SUV were in a crash.

“He was thrown into her windshield and then thrown 45 feet and from what I’ve been told, his bike went like 140 feet,” Hunter told CTV News as she was leaving St. Thomas to go spend another full day in hospital with her son.

OPP closed a stretch of Sunset Road on Thursday for hours while they investigated the crash. Just before midnight they re-opened the road and announced the motorcycle driver had “non-life-threatening injuries”.

That may be the case, but Taylor’s injuries surely are life altering.

“His injuries were so extensive, they rushed him to London right away,” said Hunter.

“I don’t know how he’s alive. Literally everything from his neck down is broken. I don’t know how he’s alive, but for some miracle he is and I’m just grateful for that.”

Hunter is a postal worker, so is currently off the job. It allows her to spend the time needed with her son but means they will suffer some financial difficulties during this trying time.

“Gage will need a lot of support and rehabilitation to get through this,” said Taylor’s aunt Kristen Beech, who started an online fundraiser for her nephew and his family to help with the costs of medical supplies, parking, and other expenses while he’s in hospital.

“He will not be able to work for a long while. His mom is not working right now, and I would like to be able to get as much help as possible for her and for Gage,” said Beech.

Although currently in a medically induced coma, Hunter said they have woken up Gage periodically due to his head injuries.

“They do wake him up I think, like, every day just for a couple seconds to make sure he can follow commands,” said Hunter.

“Yesterday (Friday) when they woke him up, they asked him to stick out his tongue and to give a thumbs up which he did. He’s going to recover; it’s just going to be a long road.”

Friday, Hunter made eye contact with her son during the brief time he was awake.

“I said I love you so much Gage and he nodded his head at me and gave me a thumbs up and tears were coming down his cheeks, so I know he knows what’s happening,” said Hunter.

Hunter always worried about her son riding a motorcycle, especially after losing her father to a motor vehicle crash more than two decades ago.

It’s going to be a long road to recovery with doctors saying he won’t even be able to stand up for at least three months.

“He does live on his own, so we are going to have to give up his apartment and bring him home, because he’s just not going to be able to take care of himself,” said Hunter.

Despite everything that has happened, she is grateful her son is alive.

“He is a very, very lucky boy.”
