Bruce County building more affordable housing in Walkerton

Officials with Bruce County say they've greenlit a new affordable housing project in Walkerton.

Bruce County plans on building more affordable housing.

Purchasing 1.5 acres of land in the Eastridge Business Park in Walkerton, the county plans to build a 40-unit community housing project. Described as a “residential, apartment-style development,” the land purchase was just finalized this week.

Bruce County owns and operates 700 affordable housing units, but has more than 1000 people on their community housing waiting list.

The last community housing project Bruce County built was in Kincardine. Penetangore Place has 35 units, and opened in 2021.

“This development will blend affordable and market-rate housing in a way that is both financially sustainable and socially inclusive. Our last build, the Penetangore Hub in Kincardine, is known for its welcoming atmosphere and innovative design. We’re proud to be able to carry those principles forward with this new build,” said Bruce County Housing Corporation Chief Executive Officer and Bruce County’s Director of Human Services, Tina Metcalfe.

“Community housing is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a driver of economic growth. Projects like this help keep workers in the area, create jobs and provide much-needed housing for those in our manufacturing, construction and service sectors. They play a vital role in building long-term stability and supporting the healthy growth of our community,” said Municipality of Brockton Mayor, Chris Peabody.

It’s not yet been made public when construction on the Walkerton affordable project will begin.
