‘An exceptionally demanding 24-hour period’: OPP field more than 3,000 calls during severe weather

It was a busy 24 hours for first responders across southwestern Ontario, with police responding to more than 3,000 calls for service as severe weather pummeled the region late last week.

In a social media post, OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk says police had “an exceptionally demanding 24-hour period” as they responded to calls across the southwestern Ontario between Thursday and Friday.

Police received approximately 3,024 calls for service during the 24-hour period.

A powerful storm moved into the region on Friday, bringing strong winds gusts, snow and rain. Sanchuk says 200 of those calls pertained to car crashes.

Multiple collisions and rollovers led to road closures and traffic delays across the area, including Highways 401, 402 and 403.

Sanchuk says it placed “significant pressure” on first responders.

“This surge in activity highlights the dedication of the many individuals who support public safety during severe weather,” he said.

In the video Sanchuk thanked police, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, tow truck and snowplow operators for their efforts in ensuring roads were cleared and people in need of help were assisted.

Sanchuk went on to thank the public for their patience amid the severe weather and subsequent road closures.

“Together, these collective efforts helped maintain safety and civility during a period of intense demand,” he said.

As warmer and drier spring weather approaches, Sanchuk ended the video by reminding drivers to always drive according to road conditions and to make sure “safety is the priority on every trip.”
