Canada's Olympic medal haul: 24 and counting

Short-track speedskater Charle Cournoyer won Canada’s fourth medal on Friday, capturing bronze in the men’s 500-metre short-track race.

Meanwhile, Canada took home its second gold medal in curling at the Sochi Olympics Friday morning, with skip Brad Jacobs leading Canada to defeat Great Britain in the final curling match.

Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., led his team to the championship game after a 10-6 win over China in the semi-final. The medal is Canada’s third straight Olympic gold in men’s curling.

Earlier Friday, Marielle Thompson won gold and Kelsey Serwa snatched silver in the women’s skicross final, which brought Canada back up to second place in medal standings.

Thompson and Serwa’s two medals came the day after the Canadian women’s hockey team defeated Team USA to win their fourth consecutive gold medal at the Olympic Games, and curler Jennifer Jones led her team to gold after a stunning sweep of the Olympic tournament.

In fact, Canadian women have been making their presence felt on the podium all week, including Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse’s gold-medal finish in women’s bobsleigh.

Canada’s medal count now stands at a total of 24, with 9 gold, 10 silver and five bronze. That means Team Canada needs just two more medals to match Vancouver’s record haul of 26.

Canada is guaranteed a medal in hockey, as the men’s team competes against Sweden for gold on Sunday. Canada beat the United States 1-0 in the semi-final on Friday

The U.S. hockey team, which lost to Canada at the Vancouver Olympics four years ago, will battle Finland for bronze.

And Denny Morrison, Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky and Vincent De Haitre will be advancing to the B final on Saturday, speedskating in the men's team pursuit for bronze, after losing to South Korea in the semi-final heat.

Meanwhile, the women’s team pursuit, consisting of speedskaters Kali Christ, Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler, was relegated to the C final, which will take place on Saturday.
