Special Olympics Track and Field Day held in Guelph

The skies were gloomy but spirits were bright at a Special Olympics Track and Field Day in Guelph.

Hundreds of students gathered in Guelph to celebrate a day of friendship and athleticism.

The Upper Grand District School Board and Wellington Catholic District School Board came together for a Special Olympics Track and Field Day at St. James Catholic High School in Guelph on Wednesday. They competed in a wide range of competitions from bocce ball to running and jumping contests. Some adapted activities were also offered to ensure everyone had a chance to take part.

“They’re having a great day and they love this day, they love seeing their friends in different schools and they just exude joy being at this event every year,” Nicole Wilson, special education resource teacher with the Wellington Catholic District School Board, said.

The event has been happening for more than 20 years now.

“This is a day that celebrates all of our students and their abilities instead of their disabilities. So, it comes out and recognizes all of the things they are capable of doing and removes barriers within sports of all of our youth who are part of the day,” Wilson said.

More than 1,500 athletes were expected at the Guelph event. Another track and field day is coming up in Orangeville on May 21. Approximately 650 athletes are anticipated to join the fun during that gathering.
