Guelph man charged for ramming police cruiser while kids were in his vehicle

A Guelph man is facing a long list of charges after a police cruiser was rammed in Guelph.

Last Friday, police were called to Speedvale Avenue East around 7:45 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle.

Officers found a man sleeping in the driver’s seat and they said two young children were strapped into car seats in the back of the vehicle. The man told the officers he had driven a friend to the area and was waiting for her to come back. He also gave police a fake name.

While officers were investigating, the man threw his vehicle into reverse and hit a cruiser, causing some damage, before he sped off.

Police found the vehicle near Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue. The children were safe in a nearby home.

On Wednesday afternoon, police tracked down the suspect and arrested him after a brief chase. Police said he had a folding knife and a small amount of methamphetamine on him.

A 48-year-old Guelph man was charged with dangerous driving, obstructing police, flight from police, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of breaching a probation order and four counts of breaching a bail order.
