Guelph couple loses US$25K to bank scam

Guelph Police say scammers tricked a local couple out of $25,000 US.

The pair were contacted by a person, claiming to represent their bank, who was investigating a possible fraud.

Police said a “courier” later visited the couple’s home to collect their bank cards.

“The complainants were instructed to attend their bank to obtain new cards, but when they went on Wednesday, staff informed them there was no appointment booked,” a media release said. “Investigation revealed funds had been withdrawn from their account.”

Police are once again reminding the public to be wary of telephone calls, emails or texts from strangers.

“It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before taking action,” they advised.

Scams can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, through their online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501, even if there has been no financial loss.
