The Guelph Police Service is mourning one of their own. William “Bill” McCart, who served as the city’s police chief from 1985 to 1988, has died. McCart joined the force as a 19-year-old cadet in 1949. “After working his way through the ranks and developing a reputation as a keen investigator in the Criminal Investigation Bureau, he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations in 1980,” a media release said. He became the acting chief in September 1985 before taking over for Chief Lorne Halls on Jan. 1, 1986. “He’s a policeman’s policeman and his great attribute is fairness,” the media release from Guelph Police said, quoting then-Mayor John Counsell. McCart officially stepped down from the role in April 1988.
