72-year-old Guelph man charged with impaired driving after crash

A 72-year-old Guelph man is facing charges of impaired driving after a collision Thursday night.

Guelph Police were called to Stevenson Street North near Emma Street where a driver had rear-ended another vehicle causing significant damage to both cars.

“They spoke to one of the drivers, who was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech and an odour of alcohol on his breath,” police said in a news release.

He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

The man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Guelph police is encouraging the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly.

“Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home,” said police.

Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
