Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that may be producing a tornado in Waterloo Region. The tornado was reported over Orr’s Lake in North Dumfries Township and was moving east at 30 km/h, according to a warning issued Saturday. The storm was expected to affect Orr’s Lake and Galt. Environment Canada said the storm may also produce damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall. “This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the warning said. Residents in the affected area are being urged to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room or sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches. If no shelter is available, people are advised to lie in a low spot and protect their heads from flying debris. Those on the water are advised to return to shore and seek shelter if possible, or move directly away from the tornado’s path. If that is not possible, people should wear a lifejacket, lie face down and protect their heads. Tornado warnings are issued when a thunderstorm is producing or is likely to produce a tornado.
