More than 1,000 truckloads of snow hauled to Stratford snow dump

As clean-up efforts continue across southern Ontario, the City of Stratford said more than five Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of snow has been hauled away from their streets.

In a social media post on Friday, the city said 1,000 truckloads of snow, adding up to approximately 12,000 cubic metres, have been removed from the streets and taken to a “snow dump” off Lorne Avenue.

But the work isn’t done yet.

“Road salt remains in short supply across the province, but we are managing through the use of “pickled sand,” which is salt mixed with sand,” the post read. “This serves to provide some traction while breaking down snow and ice. That mixture is adjusted based on the temperature, as road salt becomes less effective the colder it gets.”

The city said crews are still trying to clear and treat sidewalks and are focusing on reducing hard-packed snow and ice.

“We have been working since last Friday to remove snowbanks, and that will continue as resources allow. Please understand that this takes time, and involves the careful coordination of several pieces of City and contractor equipment,” the post said.

The city also thanked everyone for their patience.
