Introducing the Hamilton Hammers, Canada’s newest AHL team

Hamilton’s new American Hockey League (AHL) team has a name: the Hammers.

The franchise is the AHL affiliate for the NHL’s New York Islanders.

The official name and logo were unveiled by the Oak View Group and TD Coliseum on Thursday.

“Rooted in Hamilton’s history as a resilient steel town, the team’s logo features crossed hammers symbolizing the strength, grit and togetherness of the community, embodying both the city’s steelworking heritage and the spirit of the game,” a news release said.

The Hamilton Hammers jerseys will feature orange and blue as a nod to the Islanders’ colour palette. Fans will get a first look at them in the coming weeks as the team prepares to launch their online merchandise store.

They will be playing out of the newly-renovated 18,000-seat TD Coliseum on York Boulevard. The official launch will be held this fall ahead of their first games in the AHL’s North Division.

The announcement comes after the AHL affiliate team was relocated from Bridgeport, Connecticut.
