Flood warnings, watches issued across Grand River watershed

The quick change from snow to freezing rain can cause flooding. CTV’s Karis Mapp tells us how to deal – and prevent – damage in your home.

The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued multiple flood warnings and watches as temperatures, rain and snowmelt continue to impact river levels across the watershed.

A flood warning was issued for Drayton on Friday night. The conservation authority said up to 10 millimetres of rain fell throughout the day and ice and snow melted as temperatures stretched into the double digits.

However, the temperature is expected to drop below freezing on Saturday as another low-pressure system is expected to bring ice pellets and snow to parts of southern Ontario.

The Grand River Conservation Authority said river flows are expected to reach Flood Warning Zone 1 in Drayton Friday evening. That zone includes properties along the Conestogo River, including Wellington Street, River Run Road and Elm Street.

Meanwhile, previously issued flood watches for the New Hamburg, Ayr, Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations, Cayuga, Caledonia and Dunnville areas remain in effect.

According to the conservation authority, major reservoirs across the watershed are at normal seasonal levels and are being managed to help reduce downstream flooding.

Current flood warnings and watches remain in effect until noon on Monday.

The Township of Wilmot said Holland Mills Road from Bleams Road to Nith River Bridge, and Lisbon Road, east of Nafziger Road, is closed due to flooding.

Hostetler Road is also closed from Spahr Line to Waterloo Street due to a watermain break.

There is no word on when roads will reopen.
