A young girl described what led up to her mother’s death during testimony Wednesday at Dylon Moreira’s second-degree murder trial.

Moreira is also charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault for stabbing the seven-year-old girl and his own mother at a Kitchener home on Nov. 15, 2022.

CTV News is not naming the two adult victims as they might inadvertently reveal the child’s identity, which is protected by a publication ban.

The girl, now 10-years-old, testified virtually from the Child Witness Centre about the night she, her mother and Moreira’s mother were stabbed.

The court was shown a video of an interview the girl did with a Waterloo Regional Police Service detective in 2022. She was in a hospital bed, holding a stuffed animal and her arm was heavily bandaged.

In the video, she described a chaotic scene involving a knife.

“Mom said something and Dylon just snapped,” she could be heard telling the detective.

The girl claimed Moreira was angry because her brother had hacked his computer.

In the 2022 video, she recalled Moreira saying: “‘You’re all dead. You’re all dead. Everyone is going down.’”

Wednesday’s testimony did not clear up the order in which the victims were stabbed.

The girl only recalled her mother saying: “‘Honey, did he stab you?’”

She told the court she had five stab wounds.

“Two times on my arm, one in my armpit, one in my leg and one behind my ear.”

The girl also testified that Moreira held her mother’s throat with one hand and a knife was in the other.

“I was screaming, ‘Dylon, we love you, we love you,’” she recalled. “I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, ‘We hate you, Dylon.’”

The girl also told the court there had been physical altercations prior to November 2022 between Moreira and her mother. One, she explained, involved a chair.

“I’m going to suggest to you that Mr. Moreira never hit your mother with a chair,” defence lawyer Stephen Gehl said during cross examination.

“That’s not true,” the girl responded.

“You seem to find that amusing,” Gehl continued. “Why?”

He then pointed out the girl had been spinning on her chair at the Child Witness Centre.

Justice Gibson asked the girl to stop moving and answer Gehl’s questions.

She then signaled that she wanted to take a break.

After a brief recess, Gehl continued the cross examination.

“I’m going to say your mom’s ribs were never broken and Dylon never threw the chair,” Gehl stated.

“That’s wrong,” the 10-year-old replied.

The defence then said the girl’s mother was high on drugs the day of the stabbings.

“I’m going to suggest that your mom grabbed the knife first,” Gehl continued. “And I’m going to suggest that your mom stabbed Dylon in the head.”

The girl denied both the accusations.

Gehl will continue his cross examination of the girl on Thursday.
