Canstruction returns to Conestoga Mall in support of food bank

You may notice some new structures at Conestoga Mall as Canstruction returns.

Teams put their best canned designs forward at an annual charity event that raises money for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Canstruction is a week-long event at Conestoga Mall, where businesses and community groups work together to turn cans into art with the ultimate goal of building a future without hunger.

The designs are made from 26,000 unopened cans.

“Every year, I’m amazed by the creativity and care that goes into these incredible builds, made entirely from non-perishable food,” said Kim Wilhelm, CEO at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, in a media release ahead of the event. “Right now, one in nine households in our community is accessing food support. Canstruction not only sparks imagination—it raises vital food and funds to help families and individuals in need.”

All cans used in the structures will be distributed to the 61 organizations in the Community Food Assistance Network, a group that supports nearly 73,000 people.

From March 14 to 22, the public can check out the structures at Conestoga Mall and donate to cast a vote for their favourite.

The winning design will receive the People’s Choice Award on March 23. People can also vote online.

By March 18, about $1,500 had been raised. The goal is to raise $15,000.
