A high-risk offender will remain in custody for breaching a court order to stay away from downtown Guelph. Medhani Yohans, 37, was released from the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton on Aug. 31. Guelph Police said he got on a bus, which dropped him off in downtown Guelph. He was then spotted by one of their officers. “[Yohans] spent some time shopping, going in various stores [and] walking around,” Scott Tracey, a media relations coordinator for Guelph Police, told CTV News on Wednesday. “He had ample opportunity to leave the downtown, to get outside the borders that he had been ordered to stay away from. He did not do so.” Within hours of his release, Yohans was charged with nine counts of breaching probation. History with Guelph Police Yohans has a history of violence, including two sexual assaults involving strangers. Guelph Police believe he is likely to reoffend and poses a serious danger to women. The 37-year-old has been in-and-out of custody since 2024. He was initially told to stay away from specific addresses but, after violating that stipulation multiple times, the banned area was expanded to include all of city’s downtown. Next steps Yohans returned to court on Friday. CTV News cannot share details about what happened during his bail hearing, only that a detention order was issued by the judge. Yohans will remain behind bars until his next court date on Aug. 11.
