Average homeowner in City of Waterloo will pay $107 more next year on property taxes

Next year’s budget has been set for the City of Waterloo.

On Monday, city council confirmed a 6.4 per cent property tax increase for 2026.

That’s approximately $9 more per month, or $107 annually, for the average homeowner.

The number holds to the 6.41 per cent increase that was listed in the city’s three-year budget, which was released on Dec. 9, 2024.

“The City of Waterloo continues to face pressures, including some that were not part of our original three-year budget deliberations,” Councillor Diane Freeman, the city’s finance liaison, acknowledged in a news release. “We are funding updated labour and other committed operation obligations, as well as needing to cover provincial legislative changes and downloaded services, while continuing to provide the services that people use every day.”

Some of the highlights included hiring eight additional firefighters and a transportation engineer supervisor.
