10 year anniversary of the Caledonia land dispute

Ten years ago a land dispute in Caledonia pitted neighbour against neighbour.

On February, 28, 2006 members of the Six Nations Reserve erected road blocks leading to the Douglas Creek Estates insisting that the provincial government didn't have the right to sell the property to developers.

As a result, twenty-one protestors were arrested and the conflict escalated. More road blocks were built on a main highway in and out of town. On another road, a wooden bridge was set on fire.

On May 22^nd, 2006 thousands of people were left in the dark after protestors set fire to a hydro one substation.

The situation remained tense for another year after that.

While the barricades eventually came down and life in Caledonia returned to normal, there was never a resolution to the conflict.

The government bought the land from the developer and the property remains vacant with the exception of one show home.
